2013 Professional Development Program: Media Training
Join GFW PRSA for its 2013 Professional Development Program as Dr. Joe Trahan, III, APR, Fellow PRSA, de-mystifies the art of media relations. Dr. Trahan will deliver an engaging custom-tailored and extremely interactive media training session during the morning and discuss presentation skills during the GFW PRSA luncheon that afternoon. This is the train the trainers edition to media training, so come ready to pick up the tips for how to make your training that much better!

The morning session covers:
Prep-Know the Media & Reporter: Prepare for the Difference between Live & Edited
- Practice the 5-Good-Questions-Answers; 5-Bad-Questions-Answers: 5-Ugly-Questions-Answers.
- Research-Develop-Present your Command Messages/Talking points.
- Understand how to use non-verbal & hand gestures & proper appearance. How to properly use your voice & eye contact.
The Interview
- Opening 25-45 second summary lead of Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? Command Message and Shut up!
- Use The Listen-Pause-Think-Answer Technique.
- Use the 10-12 second Bridging Response Method of Answer or Acknowledge Command Message-Stop!
- Closing Statement by repeating your opening statement.
Luncheon: Spicy Presentation Skills
Dr. Trahan will help attendees learn how to prepare and deliver excellent presentations with power and substance by using the Understand-Create-Address and Navigate Spicy Communication Method.

$65 for the morning session only & $75 for both morning session and luncheon. If attending only the luncheon, the cost is:
- GFW PRSA Members – $25
- National PRSA Members – $30
- Non-members – $35
- Students – $20
Walk-ups: Add an additional $5 to the above prices
To account for additional costs associated with walk-ups and other meeting services, the Greater Fort Worth Chapter of PRSA uses the following reservation policy: Online reservations are due no later than 5 pm the Friday prior to the luncheon, and cancellations must be made by 5 p.m. the day before the luncheon. No-shows will be billed or a representative may attend in that person’s place at no additional charge. Walk-ups are accepted for an additional $5 if space is available.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Joseph V. Trahan, III, APR, Fellow PRSA
A New Orleans native, Dr. Joseph V. Trahan, III, APR, Fellow PRSA, has over thirty-one years of public relations / affairs experience in governmental, association, and educational and non-profit public relations. Dr. Trahan is retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army Reserve (USAR), and a former Commander of the 314th Public Affairs Operations Center located in Birmingham, Alabama. While in the armed forces, Dr. Trahan successfully operated four Joint Information Bureaus and one Joint Information Center from 1991-94. Some of his assignments were: Joint Logistics over the Shore -1992; the Presidential Task Force Andrew-1992; the National Boy Scout Jamboree -1993 and the 50th Anniversary of Operation Overlord (D-Day) – 1994. Since 1998, Dr. Trahan has superbly trained more than 3,500 people yearly in media relations throughout almost all of the United States. England, Norway, France, Belgium, Paraguay, Mexico and the Netherlands. Dr. Trahan graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Military History. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Public Relations from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations and Advertising from The University of Southern Mississippi. An accredited member of Public Relations Society of America, Dr. Trahan is a former member of the National PRSA Board of Directors and National PRSSA Faculty Advisor. Dr. Trahan is also a Fellow in Public Relations Society of America’s College of Fellows. He’s also a long-term fan of The Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints!
