TCU’s School of Journalism and Strategic Communication Splitting Into Two Separate Schools
Effective June 1, TCU’s School of Journalism and Strategic Communication will be divided into two separate sections: the School of Journalism and the School of Strategic Communication.
Both schools will remain part of the newly renamed Bob Schieffer College of Communication, which also includes the Communication Studies and the Film-Television-Digital Media departments. The new chairs for the School of Journalism and the School of Strategic Communication (formerly advertising and public relations) will be announced June 1.
University leadership believes the division will allow the once-combined schools the opportunity to develop their own distinctive identities, resulting in more specialized programs and a stronger student experience.
“The old saying ‘two is better than one’ really applies here,” said David Whillock, dean of the Bob Schieffer College of Communication. “The two-school structure stretches our ability to teach different communication methods and better serve our students in their pursuit of academic and professional excellence.”
Curriculum for both schools will remain largely similar for the Fall 2014 semester, although changes may occur later as the Schools mature separately. However, each school will receive a new website in early June when the schools officially separate.
Dividing the two areas of study into separate schools has been a topic of discussion at TCU for several years.
“Journalism and strategic communication are both unique fields that are evolving in unique and exciting directions,” said Dean Whillock. “With the recent renaming to the Bob Schieffer College of Communication, the time seemed ripe to consider other structural changes that would better enhance College operations and strengthen the student experience.”
